X-Men: Apocalypse is about to come out and wrap up the First Class series. So now is a good time to brush up on your X-Men trivia. The universe has become so expansive that there are so many interesting things you’ve probably looked over. So here 12 things you probably never knew about the Marvel franchise.

5. Ian McKellen helped writers in X-Men 2 create the scene of Iceman talking to his parents to accurately capture what it’s like for someone who is gay to come out
6. Kelsey Grammer wanted to play Beast in X-Men : The Last Stand so badly that he auditioned, making it his first audition in 20 years
7. James McAvoy shaved his head for X-Men: First Class but they wanted him to have hair so he wore hair extensions for the role
