Just in case you aren’t up to date with the books, Lady Stoneheart is Lady Catelyn Stark brought back from the grave. After she is murdered along with her son Robb Stark at the Red Wedding, the Freys throw her corpse into the river. Three days later, the Brotherhood without Banners find her but Thoros of Myr refuses to bring her back because she had been dead for too long. Instead, Beric Dondarrion decides to trade away his life to resurrect Lady Catelyn and she rises as Lady Stoneheart. Unlike Jon Snow who was more or less the same when he came back from the dead, Lady Stoneheart is much more vengeful than before, and is hellbent on hunting down those who betrayed her.

So why she isn’t coming back?!
Thanks to his Patreon, YouTuber Preston Jacobs went to Balticon where he was able to have dinner with George R.R. Martin. During the dinner, Martin was asked about Lady Stoneheart and he stated that she had been cut from the show. He went on to say that “if he were involved in the show things would be different, but he’s busy trying to finish books.” Here is a link to the YouTuber’s video on the subject.
Despite all of this, we aren’t convinced we’ve seen the last of Lady Stoneheart/Lady Catelyn Stark. Here are some reasons why she might be coming back anyway.
In the latest Game of Thrones episode entitled,”The Broken Man”, we get to see the return of the Hound who was another character thought to be dead. Recovered from his duel with Brienne of Tarth, we see him living with a happy community of sorts. Then three men from the Brotherhood without Banners show up asking questions and giving off a threatening vibe before they depart. Later, the Hound finds his newly adopted community slaughtered.
Two important points can be derived from this episode. The first is the return of the Hound which adds to the overall theme of resurrection for the season. If Jon Snow, Uncle Benjen, and the Hound have returned, then it’s clear that Game of Thrones doesn’t have a problem with bringing back characters. If this is the case, why should Lady Stoneheart be exempt?
The second point is that the Brotherhood without Banners is murdering innocents all of a sudden. If you remember back when Thoros of Myr picked up Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie a few seasons ago, he was kind to them and gave them food to eat. Can we perhaps conclude that the Brotherhood has a new vengeful leader? In the books, the Brotherhood becomes much more merciless after Beric Dondarrion dies and Lady Stoneheart takes leadership in his place. Could the show be possibly throwing us a hint?
